following will give you a sense of what the surgery is like at Gene Gerace.
All operations are performed in the comfortable
congenial atmosphere of our well-equipped out-patient facilities.
During the procedure you will be sitting in a comfortable surgical chair with a
surgical gown covering your clothes,as you read, watch tv or just chat with the
doctor and nurse
In preparation for the procedure, you will be given a very light general
anesthesia in order to avoid the brief discomfort of the injection of the local
anesthetic. After this there is no pain or discomfort felt by the patient. At
this time the doctor transplants 300 to 1000 slit grafts of your own hair to
the balding or thinning area. The slit grafts which, are genetically programed
to grow for your lifetime, are taken from the area around the back of the
scalp, known as the "donor area". Then they are placed in a design
that closely matches your original hair pattern in the balding or thinning area
on top of the scalp, known as the "recipient area". The slit grafts
are linear in shape and about 1/2 inch in length - resembling a paper cut.
Depending on the thickness and density of the hair at the patient's donor site,
each graft will vary in the amount of hair per slit depending on the
placement.Since the hair roots and follicles are found on the superficial of
the skin, the doctor needs only to go as deep enough to ensure that the entire
follicle is removed; the underlying tissue never touched small spaces are left
between the transplants to allow an adequate blood supply to reach each one
during the healing process. Should the patient desire additional thickness of
growth of hair, these spaces can be filled in with additional transplants
within 6 to 8 wks after the initial procedure is performed
