  How do hair transplants work?

  First, clients are made comfortable with pre-operative medication, and then given a local anesthetic in the area where the hair will be removed. Then a strip of hair is removed from the donor site at the back of the head and cut into smaller sections for transplant. The site for the new placement is prepared, and the graft is inserted. Healing is brief, and complications are rare if the doctor is skilled, uses the best equipment, and takes the time and care to diagnose the situation and plan for the best possible result.

   

  Terms can be confusing.

  Terms like "micrograft," "minigraft," "monograft" sound impressive, but you'll need to know what they really mean. Each term describes a different size graft and the number of hairs it contains. "Micrografts" contain one or two hairs. "Minigrafts" contain up to six or seven. Each size graft should be carefully planned according to the client's own personal hair loss needs.

  What types and sizes of hair grafts will the surgeon use?

  "Micrografts" should be used at the hairline to get a natural look. The last thing you want to see in the mirror is a rigid wall of hair in front. Minigrafts should be used to fill in areas in back of the hairline, but they should be spaced naturally to avoid the appearance of clumping, like doll's hair.
